The Letter Explained Why Winifred Changed Her Will

Gordon read the letter without speaking. Winifred had written that she loved him, but love did not erase what had happened. She knew about every transfer, every excuse, and every promise to repay money that never returned. She also knew about the water bill. In fact, she had known for years. She wrote that Josephine had never once asked for recognition, repayment, or anything in return.

Then Preston reached the section concerning the will. Winifred had not left me her house, despite what Gordon had assumed. The property was to be sold, with most of the proceeds placed into a scholarship fund for local nursing students. Gordon would receive a smaller fixed inheritance, reduced by the amount Winifred documented as unpaid transfers. I had been left only one thing: her old wooden card table and the tin of peppermints she always kept beside the door.
...

Gordon looked genuinely stunned. He had arrived expecting to prove that I manipulated his mother for money, only to discover that there was almost no money coming to me at all. Preston quietly asked him whether he still intended to challenge the will. Gordon stared at his mother’s handwriting for a long time before finally shaking his head.

A week later, I found the card table waiting on my porch with the peppermint tin sitting on top. Inside was one final note. Winifred wrote that she had known about every $41 payment and had secretly added the same amount to a savings account in my name. I laughed when I read it. Even at eighty-three, she had refused to let me have the last word. I had spent six years believing I was quietly looking after her. Somehow, she had been quietly looking after me too.
