The Bonds Were Never Part of Grandpa’s Estate

Mrs. Granger returned twenty minutes later with the bank’s estate specialist on speakerphone. The bonds were legitimate, and because my full maiden name appeared as co-owner on every one, they were not simply property my cousins could divide through Grandpa’s estate sale. Several had stopped earning interest years earlier. Together, their current redemption value was a little over $41,000.

Then Mrs. Granger showed me something stranger. Grandpa had visited that same branch eight months before he died and asked how jointly registered bonds would be handled after his death. The employee had made a note in his customer file: “Customer wants Diane Marie Collins protected as surviving owner.” Grandpa had known exactly what he was doing. Gary’s warning suddenly made sense.
...

I called the estate attorney instead of my cousins. When he saw Linda’s sticky note, his expression changed. He explained that Gary and Linda had already asked whether “old certificates” found in the house could be treated as abandoned estate property if nobody claimed them. They had never mentioned my name. The attorney requested copies of every bond and told me not to surrender the originals to anyone.

That evening, Gary called seven times. Linda sent three messages accusing me of stealing from the family. I answered neither. Two weeks later, the bank completed the ownership verification and began processing the bonds in my name. I used part of the money to clear my sons’ remaining school expenses and placed the rest into savings. Grandpa had hidden the envelope somewhere only a patient person cleaning his supposedly worthless basement would likely find it. My cousins had offered me $450 to remove the junk. Instead, they accidentally paid me to discover the one thing they desperately hoped I never would.
