Mr. Preston explained that the card was connected not to an ordinary checking account, but to a trust my father had created before his death. The original investment had been modest compared with what I was seeing now, but it had remained invested for nineteen years through a privately managed portfolio. More importantly, the trust named me as the sole beneficiary. Daniel had never owned any portion of it.
Then Mr. Preston showed me something that made my hands go cold. Someone had contacted the bank twice during the previous month asking whether assets belonging to Thomas Hale had ever passed to me. The caller had identified himself as representing my husband. The bank had disclosed nothing, but the timing was impossible to ignore. Daniel had apparently known there might be money connected to my father before he pushed those papers in front of me.
