The Cake Exposed What Marguerite Had Been Hiding
Marguerite was staring at the bakery label taped across the plastic lid. It carried her name, phone number, and a standing-order number. I had found the container that morning inside my husband’s car while looking for folding chairs. Beneath it were three more receipts from the same bakery. Chocolate cake, cinnamon rolls, pastries, and cheesecakes. All ordered regularly for almost two years.
My husband finally admitted the truth. Marguerite had never been nearly as strict about food as she pretended. Every Sunday after criticizing my cooking and throwing things away, she would ask him to pick up desserts and snacks for her privately. He had gone along with it because, in his words, “Mom doesn’t want everyone judging her.” I stared at him. For years, he had expected me to tolerate humiliation so his mother could protect an image she didn’t even follow herself.
