The Dinner Finally Made Roman Carry His Share

Roman finally admitted it. “Yes,” he said quietly. “I thought because Wren was home, she could handle it.” His father stared at him. “With a broken arm?” Roman tried explaining that work had been stressful, but Marguerite stopped him. “Your wife is working too. And even if she weren’t, those babies are still yours.” For once, nobody allowed him to turn exhaustion into an excuse.
...

Then I took out the schedule Roman had rejected and placed it beside my plate. I explained that my doctor had warned that overusing my injured arm could delay healing. Nadia immediately offered to stay with me the following morning while Roman rearranged his work schedule. His father looked at him and said, “You do not need your mother and sister rescuing you from parenting your own children.” Roman’s face went red, but he nodded.

The real change came the next morning. I handed Roman the monitor, bottles, and written feeding instructions, then went to my follow-up appointment alone. He handled both boys for four hours. When I returned, the living room was chaotic, his shirt was covered in formula, and Silas was asleep against his chest. Roman looked exhausted. “I had no idea,” he admitted. I answered, “That’s because you never stayed long enough to find out.”

After that, we divided nights, bottles, laundry, appointments, and childcare according to what I could safely do while healing. I also made counseling a condition of continuing the marriage, because one decent week could not erase five months of avoidance.

Roman once told me mothers did not get days off.

What he finally learned was simpler:

fathers do not get to opt out.
