What Happened After I Took Their House

The next thirty days were louder than Christmas morning had ever been. Corinne called relatives, neighbors, even old family friends, telling everyone I had heartlessly stolen her home. Unfortunately for her, Aunt Maren had already shared the bank records showing where my monthly payments to Mom had really gone. One by one, the people Corinne expected to defend her stopped answering. Garrett eventually sold the new SUV, several electronics, and most of the expensive gifts they had bought while their mortgage went unpaid.
...

My mother came to my house three days before the deadline. She did not apologize for what she had said to Piper and Micah. Instead, she asked whether I could at least let Corinne stay another six months. That told me everything I needed to know. I asked Mom whether she had once considered how my children felt sitting on an empty carpet while their cousins opened piles of presents. She lowered her eyes but never answered.

Corinne and Garrett moved into a small rental across town. I eventually sold the house to a young family rather than keeping it as some permanent monument to resentment. The money I recovered went into education accounts for Piper and Micah, along with a family vacation fund. That summer, I took them to the beach for the first time. Nobody compared them to anyone. Nobody told them they deserved less.

Months later, Piper asked me whether Grandma still believed Santa disliked her. I pulled her close and told her something I wished I had said that Christmas morning: gifts never measure a child’s worth. Adults sometimes behave cruelly and blame children for it. She smiled, hugged me, and ran outside to play with Micah. That was when I knew the most important thing I had recovered was never money. It was my children’s belief that they deserved to be loved.
