The Flight Revealed What Nadia Had Really Built

Once we were airborne, my phone filled with messages. Sabine wanted to know why I had “hidden” the company from everyone. Dad’s tone changed even faster. First he demanded an explanation; twenty minutes later, he was asking whether there might be room on the return flight. I answered only once: “You weren’t interested in my life when you thought it was unimpressive. Nothing about my life changed this morning except what you learned about it.”
...

Calloway Aerospace had not appeared overnight. I had spent eleven years building an aircraft-management and leasing company, reinvesting almost everything instead of displaying it. The old sedan and inexpensive clothes were choices, not evidence that I was struggling. More importantly, I had never asked Dad for money. In fact, during two difficult years, I had quietly covered several expenses connected to his business through properly documented loans because I did not want him losing everything.

At the celebration that evening, Dad and Sabine arrived hours after me. Their behavior was completely different. Sabine suddenly introduced me to people as her “brilliant sister,” while Dad repeatedly tried to pull me aside to discuss his company. One of his credit facilities was approaching renewal, and he hoped I might invest again. I told him any business proposal could go through my finance team like everyone else’s. Family would no longer mean automatic access.

Dad stared at me and asked, “So you’re punishing us?”

“No,” I said. “I’m finally letting you believe what you always said about me.”

He frowned.

“That I should make my own way.”

They had mocked me for flying alone.

What bothered them most was discovering I had been doing exactly that for years.
