Renata’s Secret Explained Why Silas Hid Everything

Renata slowly placed the sweatshirt on the chair. “Delphine, I’m not having an affair with your husband.” Then she looked at Silas. “Tell her.” When he still couldn’t speak, Renata opened her bag and removed a folder containing DNA results and old family records. Six months earlier, she had discovered that Silas’s late father was also her biological father. She and Silas were half-siblings, something neither had known growing up.
...

But that wasn’t why she had become his emergency contact. Renata’s mother had recently been diagnosed with an inherited heart-rhythm disorder, and testing showed Renata carried the same genetic marker. Once she learned Silas existed, she contacted him because he might carry it too. His first episode happened at work only weeks later. Renata drove him to urgent care, stayed through testing, and became the one person who knew the entire medical history.

I stared at Silas. “Why didn’t you tell me?” His eyes filled immediately. He admitted he had been terrified. His father had died suddenly at fifty-one, and Silas had spent months convincing himself he could wait for definitive answers before frightening me. Listing Renata as his emergency contact felt practical because she worked nearby and understood the family history. “I thought I was protecting you,” he whispered. “You were protecting yourself from having the conversation,” I answered.

The doctors did not give us some instant devastating diagnosis that afternoon. Silas needed additional cardiac testing and specialist follow-up. We also needed something less medical: honesty.

Later, he changed his emergency contact back to me and listed Renata second.

I had walked into that hospital fearing another woman had replaced me.

Instead, I discovered my husband had found a sister—and hidden a fear he had been carrying alone.
