Aunt Philippa’s Account Changed Everything Garrett Had Taken

I spent that morning with the trustee and an attorney, going through statements, transaction records, and messages Garrett had sent bragging about “finally getting his share.” Nobody promised me the money would magically return overnight, but the bank began tracing where it had gone. Several transfers had landed in Garrett’s account, while another large payment had been made toward a vehicle registered to Kaylee. That mattered because it made the trail much easier to document.

Garrett called before noon. The confidence was gone. “Why is my account locked?” he demanded. I reminded him he had taken money from an account he never owned and had never been authorized to control. Mom grabbed the phone and started shouting that families should not involve lawyers over “rent.” I answered calmly, “Then you should have charged rent instead of emptying an account.”

I never went back to that bedroom. I stayed with a coworker until I found my own apartment and arranged to collect my belongings properly. The money became a legal and banking matter.
