The Birthday Bill Finally Forced Everyone to Choose

Dad called again twenty minutes later. The venue needed several thousand dollars before setup could continue, and Mom was furious because the quartet and final flower payment were also outstanding. Bridget eventually put part of the balance on her credit card while Dad covered the rest. Mom kept calling my decision cruel until Dad finally interrupted her. “Delia paid almost everything, and you excluded her child?” For once, the question came from someone other than me.

Two days later, Bridget came to my house alone. She admitted Mom had complained for months that Winnie was “too sensitive” and supposedly changed the atmosphere around her cousins. Bridget had stayed quiet because challenging Mom was exhausting. I told her that silence had still communicated something to Winnie: everyone knew she was unwanted, and nobody thought protecting her was worth an argument.

Mom eventually sent an apology, but I did not pretend one message repaired everything. Winnie would decide when she felt ready to see her grandmother again, and financial help would never again purchase my place in that family.
