The man standing beneath the garden light was Michael, Danielle’s father. I had not seen him since she was four years old. My first instinct was anger, but Spencer stopped me. “That’s the deal I meant,” he explained. Months earlier, Danielle had asked Spencer to help locate her father because she wanted answers before starting her own family. Spencer eventually found Michael, but Michael refused to appear unexpectedly in Danielle’s life. He agreed to come only if I spoke to him first. Spencer’s job had been getting me outside without Danielle following. Michael’s job was finally telling me why he disappeared.
