The Woman Who Paid My Tuition Had Been Keeping One Final Secret

She handed me a small envelope and asked me to open it after the show. Inside was an old photograph of a teenage boy holding a guitar that looked almost identical to the battered one I had played in the park years earlier. On the back, she had written, “My son, Daniel. He would have been proud of you.” I looked up, confused, and that was when she finally told me why she had helped a homeless sixteen-year-old she barely knew.
...

Daniel had dreamed of becoming a musician, but he never got the chance to attend music school. After losing him, she had spent years avoiding concerts and even stopped listening to the records they once loved together. Then one evening, she heard me playing in the park. Something about the song reminded her of him, so she returned the next night, and then the next. Paying my tuition became her way of turning a painful memory into something hopeful.

But there was more. She had been quietly saving money for me ever since graduation. The envelope contained paperwork for an account she wanted me to use to record my first professional album.

I could barely speak.

I told her I didn’t know how I could ever repay her.

She smiled and said, “You already did. You kept playing.”

My first album came out the following year. On the inside cover, beneath the dedication, were two names: hers and Daniel’s.
