Do Pre-Washed Grapes Really Need Washing Again Before Eating?

If a bag of grapes is clearly labeled “pre-washed,” “washed,” or “ready to eat,” they generally do not need to be washed again before eating. Produce carrying those labels has already gone through a commercial washing process intended to remove dirt and reduce contaminants before packaging. For most families, including children, eating the grapes directly from an unopened properly stored bag is considered reasonable. The important part is checking the actual wording on the package, because not every bag of grapes has been pre-washed.

...

Some people still prefer rinsing grapes at home, and there’s nothing wrong with doing that. If you choose to wash them, use clean running water rather than soap, detergent, or produce-cleaning chemicals. It’s also better to rinse only the amount you’re about to eat. Washing an entire package and putting wet grapes back into the refrigerator can introduce excess moisture, which may encourage faster spoilage or mold growth.

The situation changes if the package has been opened, handled repeatedly, dropped, or appears dirty. In those cases, another rinse is a sensible precaution regardless of what the original label says.

So your child isn’t necessarily doing anything wrong. If the grapes truly say pre-washed and ready to eat, another rinse is generally optional—not required.
