The Divorce Papers Were Only My First Move

Coralie called me next. She said I was destroying the family over “a few misunderstandings” and reminded me how much Rowan had supposedly sacrificed for me. I asked her one question: whether she had ever told me exactly what was inside the pills and treatments she kept insisting I take. She went silent. That answer was enough. I stopped every supplement immediately and scheduled appointments with my own doctors instead.

Two months later, I received my graduate-school acceptance letter. The program was overseas, exactly where I had dreamed of studying before marriage changed everything. Rowan learned about it during mediation. He stared at me across the conference table and finally understood that the divorce was not an attempt to scare him into changing. I was actually leaving.

The settlement was finalized before the semester began. I received my share of our marital assets, kept the savings that were legally mine, and walked away from everything else without looking back. Sabine disappeared from Rowan’s social media not long afterward. I never asked what happened between them. By then, it no longer mattered. The day my plane took off, I looked down at the city getting smaller beneath me and realized I had spent years believing losing my marriage would destroy my life.
