What Happened After My Father Refused Me

The morning after the wedding, Dad called three times. I ignored the first two. On the third, I answered. He sounded angry at first, insisting that I had embarrassed him by asking Emmett to walk me down the aisle. I reminded him that he had made his own choice three days before the ceremony. I had simply made mine afterward. For once, there was no argument left for him to hide behind.

Mom called later and tried to smooth things over. She said Rosalind had been emotional because of problems in her marriage and that Dad had only been trying to keep the peace. I told her peace that required sacrificing me was not peace at all. Then I asked the question neither of them had ever wanted to answer: why was Rosalind’s discomfort always more important than my happiness? Mom went quiet.

Rosalind sent me a long message that evening accusing me of turning the wedding into a public attack on her. I never responded. Desmond told me I didn’t have to keep explaining myself to people who had already decided my boundaries were disrespectful. Emmett, meanwhile, simply dropped off coffee and a small wooden frame he had made for one of our wedding photographs.

Inside that frame was the picture of us standing at the warehouse doors together. On the back, Emmett had written one sentence: “Family is whoever shows up when the door opens.” I placed it beside the bookshelf he had built for me years earlier. Dad eventually apologized, but our relationship never returned to what it had been. Maybe that was for the best. My wedding taught me that sometimes the person who earns the place beside you is not the one who was supposed to have it.
