The Dinner My Mother Had Already Planned
Marguerite arrived for dinner carrying flowers and behaving as though nothing had happened. My husband, Rowan, sat beside me while Mom served roast chicken and calmly asked Marguerite whether she had enjoyed the wedding. She smiled and said it had been beautiful. Then Mom reached beneath her chair and placed a thick folder on the table. Inside were photographs of the gift table taken throughout the evening, along with a list of every envelope several relatives remembered leaving for us.
