The Lawyer’s Call Made Me Question Everything About Our Divorce

The lawyer’s voice changed before he finished the sentence. Charles had collapsed the night before and was in the hospital. For a moment, all the anger I had been carrying disappeared beneath something heavier. I had spent fifty years beside that man. I knew the sound of his footsteps, the way he folded newspapers, the exact look he made when coffee was too hot. Divorce papers didn’t erase all of that overnight.

...

I went to the hospital, but I told myself I was only going because our children were out of town. When I walked into his room, Charles looked smaller than I remembered. He apologized for the café before I could say anything. Then he admitted something I had never understood: choosing my meals, planning my days, deciding little things for me had always been his clumsy way of taking care of me. He genuinely hadn’t realized how suffocating it felt from my side.

I didn’t suddenly regret the divorce. I still needed the independence I had fought for. But sitting there, I finally understood that the end of our marriage didn’t have to turn fifty years into a mistake. Charles and I eventually built something different. We lived separately, made our own choices, and still met for coffee every Sunday.

The strange part was that once he stopped deciding what I should order, I sometimes asked him anyway.
