The Loan Application Exposed Bennett’s Real Plan

The next morning, I froze my credit and called the lender’s fraud department. The home Wi-Fi address alone proved nothing, but the application included an email account I had never created and employment information copied from documents stored in my office—the same office Bennett had turned into his gaming room. I preserved the credit alert, changed every password, and filed an identity-theft report. The lender agreed to stop processing the application while its fraud team reviewed the device and account information connected to it.
...

Then Marcus finally asked Bennett whether he knew anything about the loan. Bennett denied it until I mentioned the salary figure on the application. His expression changed immediately. Cordelia jumped in, insisting Bennett had only been “trying to consolidate family expenses” and that I was overreacting. That explanation told me more than the denial had.

I contacted an attorney that afternoon. Cordelia and Bennett received proper written notice that their temporary stay was ending, and Marcus was told clearly that nobody would use my financial information again. Whether he stayed married to me would depend on what he did next—not what his mother demanded.

Cordelia stared at the broken refrigerator lock and called me selfish.

I looked at the fraud report on my kitchen table.

The padlock had never been the real problem.

It was simply the first thing they tried to put in my name without permission.
