The Sale Finally Ended Odette’s Claim to Ownership

Odette called again that evening, this time with Desmond beside her and an attorney supposedly “ready to challenge everything.” I calmly gave them Marguerite’s number and told them any questions could go through the closing attorney. The answer they received was simple: the cabin had always been titled solely in my name. Odette had never paid toward the purchase, never held an ownership interest, and never had a lease. Family vacations, furniture purchases, and years of using the property did not magically turn guests into owners.
...

Three days later, Odette came to my home alone. For once, there was no Desmond speaking behind her. She admitted she had genuinely started believing the cabin would eventually become hers and that excluding me had seemed harmless because I could “always come another time.” I told her that was exactly the problem. Somewhere along the way, she stopped seeing my generosity as something I was choosing and started treating it as something she controlled.

I did not ask her to apologize for the sale.

I asked her to understand why it happened.

The money went into a smaller home closer to town, an account for my future care, and a long trip Edmund and I once dreamed about taking together.

Odette lost access to a cabin.

I finally regained access to my own life.
