The Fake Account Exposed Cole’s Larger Identity-Theft Scheme
Detective Ortiz requested a full review of every account opened using my information.
By evening, the bank had found three more.
Cole had created a credit line, a business account, and a property-services company in my name. He had used them to move money from Grandpa’s accounts, disguise personal debts, and apply for financing on a rental property he intended to control.
The £100,000 check was supposed to make the fake company look legitimate.
Once the deposit cleared, Cole planned to tell Grandpa I had invested the birthday gift and then blame me when the missing money was discovered.
The recovery number connected everything to him.
Police searched Cole’s apartment and found copies of my identification, Grandpa’s bank statements, unopened family mail, and a notebook listing future transfers. He had been using his role as Grandpa’s “helper” to collect documents for months.
Grandpa changed every account, removed Cole’s access, and hired an independent financial manager.
The original check was cancelled and replaced only after the investigation secured the evidence. My inheritance was placed into a protected account that Cole could never reach.
He later claimed he had only borrowed information because he was desperate.
But desperation did not explain the fake business, the hidden accounts, or the plan to leave me responsible.
Cole locked the study door because he thought the original check could expose him.
He was right.
