The Secret Elias Had Been Hiding From Me

On the table was an old photograph, a company document, and a letter bearing my father’s signature. Elias finally explained that the auto shop where he worked wasn’t simply his job. His late father had owned the building and several surrounding properties, and Elias had inherited them years earlier. He had deliberately continued working as a mechanic because he loved the business and had never cared about looking wealthy. But that wasn’t the secret that frightened my parents.
...

Months earlier, Elias had discovered that one of Dad’s companies had been quietly leasing property from his family’s estate. While reviewing old contracts, he found records suggesting Dad and Preston had diverted company money through inflated lease agreements. Elias had confronted my father privately and told him to correct everything before employees or investors were hurt. Dad responded by trying to convince me Elias was a penniless nobody who would ruin my future.

Suddenly, my parents’ reaction to our engagement made sense. Preston’s extravagant proposal hadn’t simply been romantic persistence either. Marrying him would have tied me closer to the people who desperately wanted Elias out of my life. Elias apologized for keeping everything from me, explaining that he wanted to know I was marrying him without money, property, or family pressure influencing my decision.

I stared at my fifteen-dollar wedding dress, our half-finished burgers, and the man I had chosen when I believed he had almost nothing. Then I pushed the documents back toward him. I told Elias that whatever happened next, we would handle it together. He smiled, reached across the table, and squeezed my hand. The biggest surprise wasn’t discovering that my broke mechanic husband owned more than anyone suspected. It was realizing I had chosen the one person who never needed money to convince me he was worth choosing.
