The Wedding Collapse Finally Exposed Everything

Marisol called eleven times before I finally answered. She was crying so hard I could barely understand her. She accused me of destroying her wedding, but I reminded her that I had never canceled anything. Fernwood Gardens had done that because required payments had not been made. The messages I shared had only confirmed what the venue was already seeing: missed deadlines, inconsistent information, and money that simply was not there.
...

Then Dad called. That conversation was different. He admitted the $95,000 check had come from money he and Mom had planned to use for retirement. Worse, Marisol had already spent a large portion on vendors that offered only partial refunds. Suddenly, my parents were terrified. The wedding they had been rescuing had become a financial hole they could not easily climb out of.

Marisol eventually moved the ceremony to a small community hall. There were folding chairs, grocery-store flowers, and fewer than sixty guests. Wren was still not invited, and this time I felt no urge to argue. Instead, I took her away for the weekend. We stayed at a lakeside hotel, ordered pancakes for dinner, and spent Saturday riding bikes along the water.

Months later, Mom apologized for allowing Marisol to make Wren feel unwanted. I accepted the apology, but I did not pretend nothing had happened. Marisol had spent months obsessing over perfect photographs while treating people like bank accounts and decorations. In the end, the expensive venue disappeared, the extravagant plans collapsed, and the photographs were much simpler than she imagined. But Wren never saw any of it. She was too busy smiling beside me in pictures that actually mattered.
