The Distance They Asked For Became Very Expensive

I placed Emmett’s old red tool chest on my garage workbench and spent the afternoon cleaning years of dust from the handles. Inside, tucked beneath a tray of screwdrivers, I found an envelope containing several notes he had written before he died. One sentence stopped me completely: “Roz, never make yourself smaller so someone else can live larger.” I sat there for a long time before calling a contractor about the window, faucet, and every repair I had postponed.
...

Within two weeks, Delphine called again. The mortgage payment had bounced, Grant’s SUV refinancing had been denied, and the storage facility wanted a new card on file. She asked whether I could help “just until things stabilized.” I reminded her that the distance had been her decision. She began crying and admitted Grant had convinced her I would keep paying because “mothers always do.”

That hurt more than I expected, but it also explained everything. I told her I loved her, but love was not an automatic withdrawal from my bank account. If she wanted a relationship with me, it would have to exist without money attached to it. If she wanted distance, I would respect that too. What I would no longer do was pay for access to my own daughter and grandson.

Months later, Delphine came by alone. No emergency. No bill. No request for money. She brought Theo and a homemade pie that leaned badly to one side. We drank coffee at my repaired kitchen window while Theo helped me organize Emmett’s tools in the garage. Nothing was magically fixed, but something had changed. For the first time in years, my daughter had come to see me without needing anything. And that was the relationship I had wanted all along.
