The Person Who Gave Warren My Door Code

The police reached the house before Warren had finished unloading the truck. He tried to convince them there had been a misunderstanding, but the deed, security footage, and my statement made the situation simple. Warren and Sabine were ordered off the property, and their belongings went straight back into the truck. What bothered me more was the keypad. Only three people had ever received that temporary contractor code: me, my realtor, and my twenty-six-year-old daughter, Coralie.
...

When I called Coralie, she went silent. Eventually, she admitted Warren had asked where I was living because he claimed he wanted to send me documents from the divorce. Then he told her he needed the door code to “drop off a few boxes Mom forgot.” She gave him both without checking with me. Worse, Warren had apparently spent weeks telling her that the house had partly been purchased with money he deserved from our marriage, so he believed he had a right to use it.

I changed every code that afternoon and had a locksmith replace the physical locks before I even drove home. My attorney also sent Warren formal notice that any future entry would be treated as trespassing. Coralie apologized repeatedly, but I told her the problem wasn’t simply sharing an address. She had allowed her father to make a decision about my property without asking me.

Warren never tried it again. Sabine sent one angry message claiming they had already paid movers and storage fees, as though that somehow became my responsibility. I blocked her. Eleven days after buying my house, I learned something important about starting over: a new address means very little unless the people from your old life understand they no longer have automatic access to it.
