My Parents Pretended to Be Poor on Purpose

Dad told me that a week earlier, Priya’s father had contacted one of his business associates and casually started asking questions about our family’s finances. That alone wouldn’t have bothered him, but then Mom noticed something stranger. Priya had followed several of Dad’s companies online and had apparently told someone that rooming with me could be “really useful.” My parents didn’t know whether she was simply curious or whether she had chosen me because she thought my family had money. So they decided to find out before leaving me there for the semester.
...

Their plan was embarrassingly simple. They would arrive looking broke, drive Uncle Bertram’s awful minivan, and let Priya believe everything she had assumed about us was wrong. Dad told me to pay attention to only one thing: whether she treated me differently afterward. Suddenly, every whisper and uncomfortable glance from the previous hour made sense. I hated admitting it, but he had a point.

The answer came faster than any of us expected. After my parents left, Priya became noticeably colder. She stopped inviting me to lunch with her friends and spent most of the afternoon texting someone. That evening, I overheard her on the phone complaining that she had been “completely misled” and saying she wished she had requested another roommate. She even mentioned that she had thought my family could help her father make certain business connections.

Two weeks later, Priya discovered the truth when Dad appeared in a local business magazine she recognized. Her attitude changed almost overnight. Suddenly, she wanted to hang out again. I stayed polite, but I never forgot move-in day. My parents’ ridiculous clothes hadn’t embarrassed me after all. They had shown me something far more valuable than money ever could: exactly who was interested in me, and who was interested in what they thought my family could give them.
