The Letter His Mother Couldn’t Bury Forever

Dorian stared at Wren for several long seconds before looking at me. Then he opened the envelope and placed the original letter beside my photocopy. The dates matched. The handwriting matched. Even the postal tracking number matched. He turned toward Vivienne and asked one simple question: why had a letter marked personal and confidential, addressed directly to him, ended up locked inside her private office safe for nearly two years?
...

Vivienne tried to explain that she had only been protecting him during the succession battle, insisting that any scandal involving an unexpected child could have weakened his position. Dorian’s expression hardened when she admitted she had intercepted other messages too. Her lawyer quietly confirmed that he had warned her against hiding the letter but had been ordered to remain silent. That was when Dorian realized I had never abandoned him. He had been deliberately kept from knowing Wren existed.

He knelt beside my daughter and gently asked if he could see the wooden block she was holding. Wren studied him seriously, then placed it in his palm. Dorian laughed through tears. The resemblance between them suddenly seemed impossible to ignore. He asked me for a DNA test, not because he doubted me, but because his attorneys would need unquestionable proof before making anything public.

Three weeks later, the results confirmed what we already knew. Dorian was Wren’s father. Vivienne resigned from several family positions after an internal investigation uncovered more interference in her son’s personal affairs. Dorian never asked me to disappear. Instead, he began spending weekends in Cedar Hollow, learning bedtime stories, pancake recipes, and everything he had missed. The blank check remained unsigned on my kitchen table for months—a reminder that Vivienne had tried to put a price on something Dorian considered priceless.
