Sunday’s Moving Truck Met a Locked Front Door

Sunday morning, my doorbell camera alerted me before eight. Delphine’s car pulled into the driveway, followed by a rented moving truck. Mom and Dad arrived behind her carrying coffee like this was some cheerful family project. Delphine walked confidently toward the front door with the old key Mom had copied from my previous apartment. She inserted it, twisted, and nothing happened. Then she tried again. I watched from inside while her smile slowly disappeared.
...

I opened the door without stepping aside. “Something wrong?” Delphine stared at the boxes stacked behind her. “You changed the locks?” Mom immediately started protesting that we had already “discussed” the arrangement. I reminded her that the discussion had consisted of them entering without permission and announcing plans for rooms I had never offered. Dad told me not to embarrass everyone in front of the movers. “Then you probably shouldn’t have hired movers for a house you don’t own,” I replied.

Delphine insisted Mom had promised she could stay. That was when I handed her a folder containing a copy of my deed and a written notice stating clearly that none of them had permission to enter, store belongings, receive mail, or represent themselves as residents. I had also contacted the moving company beforehand after spotting its name in one of Mom’s texts. Their crew had already been told they could not unload anything without my authorization.

They left furious, still arguing beside a truck full of Delphine’s furniture.

That evening, Mom texted, “I hope that empty house keeps you company.”

I looked around my quiet living room and smiled.

For eleven years, I had saved for space of my own.

I finally had enough room for one thing my family had never given me: boundaries.
