The Locked Drawer Revealed What Rosalind Had Taken

Rosalind immediately protested. “You said I didn’t have to worry about that money.” Mom quietly opened another folder. Several larger payments had written repayment terms signed by Rosalind and her husband, including money used when his first dental clinic was struggling. Mom had never pursued them because every year Rosalind promised she would start paying once business improved. Business had improved dramatically. The repayment never had. Instead, Rosalind had apparently convinced herself enough time had passed that nobody remembered.

Then Mom picked up the thirty-dollar birthday card from the previous night. “I didn’t need an expensive present,” she said. “But hearing you say I couldn’t possibly need anything reminded me how often you decided I needed less so you could have more.” Rosalind began crying and accused me of deliberately humiliating her. I hadn’t known what the notebooks meant when I copied that page. But Mom had known exactly what she had kept.

She did not demand a suitcase of cash that afternoon. She scheduled a meeting with her attorney and financial adviser to review the old agreements and her estate plan properly.

Then she placed Rosalind’s thirty dollars inside the locked drawer.

“Keep track of that too,” Rosalind muttered bitterly.

Mom closed the drawer.

“Oh, sweetheart,” she said. “I always have.”
