Desmond’s Paychecks Were Going Somewhere No One Expected

On the floor were grocery receipts, pharmacy slips, envelopes with names written across them, and several prepaid utility cards. Teodoro finally explained. For seven months, Desmond had been quietly using most of every paycheck to help people around the diner who were struggling. One envelope was for an elderly customer whose electricity had been shut off. Another contained money for medication. The cash I had seen in his room was never really bike money. He was dividing it carefully before giving it away.
...

Then Teodoro explained the muddy clothes. The week before, Desmond had learned that an older homeless man he regularly brought food to had disappeared from his usual spot near the creek. Desmond went looking for him, slipped down the muddy bank, and found the man injured beneath an overpass. He stayed until paramedics arrived, then came home late and lied because he knew I would worry. “He didn’t want anyone making a big deal about it,” Teodoro said.

That afternoon, Desmond had tried to hand his entire paycheck to one of the cooks whose landlord had given her a final notice. Teodoro stopped him, and during the argument Desmond’s backpack fell open. “That’s what I meant when I said he tried again,” Teodoro told me. Desmond stared at the floor. “The bike can wait, Mom. Some things can’t.”

I hugged him before I could say anything else.

Two weeks later, Teodoro, several employees, and a few regular customers pooled together enough money to buy Desmond the matte-black bike with orange lettering.

He had spent seven months believing kindness meant giving up what he wanted.

That day, he learned kindness sometimes circles back.
