The Seventy-Three Calls Came After One Legal Truth

The first voicemail was from Coraline, furious that the florist, caterer, and tent company had been turned away at the gate. Desmond’s messages were worse. He demanded that I “stop sabotaging our wedding” and reminded me that the stone house supposedly belonged to them now. That was when I called my attorney. The key I had given them had been ceremonial; the deed transfer was prepared, but it had not yet been delivered or recorded. Legally, the stone house and its surrounding parcel were still mine.
...

I canceled only payments and services I was legally entitled to cancel, accepting any fees required by the contracts. The vendors were free to work with Coraline elsewhere if she paid them herself. The vineyard, however, remained private property, and I withdrew permission for the wedding to take place there. Emmett documented everything and notified the vendors professionally. Nobody was locked out of a home they legally occupied; Coraline and Desmond had never moved into the stone house.

By evening, Coraline finally reached me from Desmond’s phone. “You’re ruining my wedding!” she screamed. I asked one question: “Why should the woman too embarrassing to attend provide the venue, the house, and the bill?” She went quiet. Desmond grabbed the phone and threatened to involve lawyers. I calmly told him mine was already reviewing the unfinished property transfer.

The wedding eventually happened at a hotel with fewer guests and a much smaller budget.

I kept the vineyard and the stone house.

Months later, Coraline asked whether I had really been prepared to give her an eleven-million-dollar home.

“Yes,” I told her.

“That was before you explained that you wanted everything I built except me.”
