The Red Suit Carried Dad’s Final Instructions

Mr. Ashby carefully opened the stitching and pulled out a small brass key wrapped in a folded letter. Rowan’s name was written across the front in Dad’s handwriting. The letter explained the red suit first. Dad had bought it decades earlier after Rowan, then ten years old, had pointed to one in a shop window and announced that someday he would wear something “too bright for sad people.” Dad had remembered that sentence his entire life.
...

The key belonged to a safe-deposit box Mr. Ashby already knew about but had never been authorized to open alone. Dad’s instructions required Rowan, me, and the attorney to appear together after the funeral. Two days later, we sat inside a bank conference room while an employee brought out the box. Inside were family photographs, military medals, letters addressed separately to both of us, and financial records showing something neither Rowan nor I had known.

For years, Dad had quietly maintained education accounts for Rowan’s two children and had also set aside money to help me pay down the remaining mortgage on my house. The amounts were meaningful, but his letters made clear they were gifts, not the entire estate. His will still divided everything else according to the plan Mr. Ashby had prepared with him years earlier. Dad had simply wanted these particular gifts discovered together, without relatives arguing over who had received more.

Rowan read his letter twice before sliding it toward me. The final line said, “Wear the red suit so your sister asks the question. She always asks the questions that matter.”

I looked across the table at my brother and started laughing through tears.

I had arrived at the funeral thinking Rowan had disrespected Dad.

Instead, he had followed Dad’s final instruction perfectly.
