The Woman Beside Me Ended Vivienne’s Little Performance

The woman holding my arm was Eleanor, Callum’s eighty-two-year-old grandmother. Vivienne had spent years telling everyone Eleanor was too confused and frail to attend family events. That was not true. Eleanor had simply refused to speak to Vivienne after discovering how she had handled Callum’s father’s estate. When I told Eleanor about the $15,000 check, she insisted on attending the wedding herself. The moment Vivienne saw her walking beside me, she understood exactly why.
...

After the ceremony, Eleanor asked Callum and me to meet privately with the attorney who had accompanied her. Vivienne had always behaved as though inheriting the family property made her absolute ruler of everything connected to it. But several assets, including the house Callum grew up in, were still controlled by a family trust. Eleanor was one of its trustees, and Callum was a beneficiary. Vivienne could not threaten to disinherit him from property she did not personally own.

The $15,000 cleared legitimately, so I kept it—but not for myself. Callum and I used it to cover part of our honeymoon and donated the rest to the scholarship fund Eleanor supported.

Vivienne had paid me expecting humiliation.

Instead, her check financed the first week of a marriage she had tried desperately to stop.
