The Transaction File Exposed Rourke’s $31,000 Lie

I did not answer Sable’s question immediately. Instead, I told her to open the transaction file I had left on the dining table before the movers arrived. Inside were bank records showing three payments from Alden and Fern totaling $31,000. Rourke had described the money to them as a “family equity contribution” that would supposedly secure their permanent place in the villa. The problem was simple: Rourke had never owned a single percentage of my property, and neither had Sable.
...

Alden called me himself after reading the documents. “We sold our house because he told us we were buying into this one,” he said. His anger was no longer directed at me. Their attorney began reviewing the transfers and whatever representations Rourke had made. Meanwhile, the villa’s new owner followed the required legal process for possession. Nobody was magically thrown onto the street in sixty minutes; formal notices were served, access was controlled where legally permitted, and counsel handled the remaining occupancy issues.

Sable finally asked why I had never warned her.

“I did,” I said. “Every time I told you this was my house.”

Rourke had spent months behaving like an owner.

Then his own parents discovered they had paid $31,000 for rights he never possessed.

For the first time, Sable stopped blaming me and looked directly at him.
