The Forged Signature Turned Dinner Into Evidence

The caller was the Whitcombs’ attorney. He said federal investigators were at his office requesting that every document connected to the sale be preserved. My mortgage company had flagged the supposed power of attorney after comparing it with the travel restrictions and identity verification already attached to my account. The notary listed on Colby’s paperwork was also being examined in an unrelated interstate title-fraud investigation. Nobody had been arrested, and the buyers had done nothing wrong, but the transaction was now under formal review.
...

Colby’s face changed when I repeated that. I explained that I had reported the suspected forgery as soon as secure alerts reached me overseas. The $415,000 had not simply become Colby’s money; the closing funds and title records were being examined while attorneys determined how to unwind or correct the unauthorized sale without punishing the innocent couple who had moved in.

Dad finally asked, “You knew before dinner?”

“I knew someone had filed documents using my name,” I said. “Tonight was the first time Colby admitted doing it.”

Nobody moved.

Colby looked toward the folder he had proudly carried into the room.

For the first time all evening, it no longer looked like proof of his success.

It looked like evidence.
