At eight sharp, I walked into my parents’ dining room with Colton beside me and a leather folder under my arm. Dad barely waited until dinner was served before explaining the “important discussion.” His investment partnership had suffered a major downturn, several loans were coming due, and he needed me to guarantee an $8 million refinancing package. He called it temporary and kept reminding me that “family protects family.”
I opened the folder. My financial adviser had already reviewed the proposal Dad emailed that morning. The money would not simply stabilize his investments—it would also cover personal guarantees, a second mortgage, and losses from decisions he had hidden from Mom.
