The License Belonged to a Missing Woman

Detective Keller opened the file and placed an old driver’s-license photograph in front of me. The name underneath it was Adrienne Mercer—the same maiden name and birth date my wife had always used before we married.

But the woman in the photograph was not my wife.

Adrienne Mercer had disappeared from Indiana seventeen years earlier. Her identification documents vanished around the same time, and the case eventually went cold. Keller explained that the trooper who stopped us had remembered the unusual name from growing up near the case and noticed that the woman presenting the identity looked nothing like the photographs he remembered. That was why he had urged me to make the call instead of confronting her on the roadside.
...

Then Keller showed me another photograph.

This one was of Vivienne.

She had been questioned during the original investigation because she had employed the missing woman shortly before she vanished.

Suddenly, Adrienne staying overnight to “sort family photographs” felt completely different.

I did not confront either of them. Investigators told me to stay elsewhere while they verified records, fingerprints, and the history behind my wife’s identity. I cooperated and waited.

That evening, Adrienne texted me three times asking where I was.

I never answered.

After fifteen years of marriage, I finally understood why she had looked terrified during a routine traffic stop.

The officer had not discovered who my wife was.

He had discovered who she wasn’t.
