The License Belonged to a Missing Woman
Detective Keller opened the file and placed an old driver’s-license photograph in front of me. The name underneath it was Adrienne Mercer—the same maiden name and birth date my wife had always used before we married.
But the woman in the photograph was not my wife.
Adrienne Mercer had disappeared from Indiana seventeen years earlier. Her identification documents vanished around the same time, and the case eventually went cold. Keller explained that the trooper who stopped us had remembered the unusual name from growing up near the case and noticed that the woman presenting the identity looked nothing like the photographs he remembered. That was why he had urged me to make the call instead of confronting her on the roadside.
