Bennett pulled the papers from the envelope expecting bank statements. Instead, he found a copy of Warren’s estate documents and the accounting Roland had prepared. There was no automatic “50 percent” waiting for him. The assets Warren had left outright to Adelaide were hers to manage during her lifetime, and the money she personally controlled had already been moved into a carefully structured estate plan benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association, the county library, and a scholarship fund. Bennett’s inheritance from those assets had been removed.
