The U-Haul Was in My Name—And So Was a Six-Month Plan to Treat My Lake House Like Theirs

I spoke through the intercom. “Dad, that U-Haul contract has my name on it.” Nobody answered. Barrett had called me that morning after the rental company contacted the property about delivery access. Danika had used an old copy of my information from a previous family trip and listed me as the responsible party. Even worse, she had submitted paperwork to the local marina for a six-month boat slip using my lake-house address and had described herself as a long-term occupant.

...

That was when the reunion story collapsed. They were not planning a three-week visit. They intended to treat my house as Danika’s summer home, leave her children there, store equipment in my garage, and make me responsible for expenses they had arranged without permission.

I told them nobody was entering the property and that I was disputing anything opened or signed in my name. Barrett preserved the camera footage and documents, and I contacted the rental company and marina directly. If any signature had been submitted as mine, it would be reviewed properly.

Mom finally called and said, “But we’re already here.”

I looked at the U-Haul packed with their belongings.

“That sounds like something you should have considered before moving into a house you were never invited to use.”

The gate stayed closed.

For once, my family had to learn that owning something did not make it communal just because they wanted it.
