The Man in Priya’s School Was Wesley—and My Family Had Lied to Both of Us

The object in my hand was Wesley’s silver class ring. I had given it to his mother after the fire and asked her to bury it with him. When the phone connected, an older man said, “Coralie, it’s me.” I recognized something in his voice immediately. My chest tightened so badly that Priya called 911 before I could finish the conversation.

...

Wesley had survived. After weeks in a burn unit, his parents moved him out of state for treatment. While he was recovering, my father intercepted letters between us. Wesley had recently found a box his late mother kept containing several letters he had written to me—all returned with notes claiming I wanted nothing more to do with him. He had also been told I had moved on and asked that he never contact me again. Meanwhile, my family let me believe he was dead because they thought an eighteen-year-old girl would “throw away her future” waiting for a badly injured boy.

Decades passed before Wesley discovered enough of the truth to search for me. He took a temporary custodial job near Priya’s school after realizing she was my granddaughter, but he was afraid to appear at my door without warning.

When I finally met him, neither of us pretended forty-five years could be restored.

But one thing was finally returned to me.

The truth my family had buried without a grave.
