Marcus called the bank immediately. I stayed in the nursery doorway while he argued with the fraud department, insisting there had been some mistake. There hadn’t. For months, most of his salary had been routed into an account he shared with Sandra, then small amounts were transferred back whenever our household account ran low. The bank had flagged a recent attempt to move several thousand dollars into another account connected to Sandra because the activity no longer matched their usual pattern. My missing paycheck had not caused the problem. It had simply removed the money Marcus had been using to hide it.
