The Declined Grocery Card Was the First Time Mom Learned What “Surviving” Actually Cost
Mom called me before she even left the checkout lane. “My card isn’t working.” I told her calmly that it had been canceled. She immediately reminded me that she depended on that money, that groceries were expensive, and that she could not possibly live the way she was accustomed to without my help. I listened until she finished, then repeated her own words: “People survive. You can take crackers.” The silence on the other end lasted several seconds.
