California Bill Could Make Eid Official State Holidays If Newsom Signs

The bill also directs the State Board of Education to create an optional model curriculum guide covering the history of the two Islamic holidays. During negotiations, lawmakers changed language encouraging schools to “acknowledge and celebrate” Eid to the more neutral wording “exploring the history of” the holidays.

Supporters, including CAIR-CA, say the measure would provide greater recognition and accommodation for California’s Muslim community. Critics argue it could create an uneven approach toward religious observances in public schools.

Newsom has not publicly announced whether he will sign or veto the legislation. Under California’s rules, he has until roughly mid-October to act.

If signed, California would become one of the most prominent states to officially recognize both Eid holidays, potentially influencing similar legislation elsewhere.
