Inside the envelope was a stack of grocery receipts, handwritten notes, and copies of bank statements covering almost the entire two years I had helped her. Every purchase I had ever made was listed carefully, right down to the bread, milk, and medication I picked up each week. Beside many of the receipts, she had written little notes explaining that I had refused repayment whenever she tried to give me extra money. Her lawyer said she had created the file because she knew her son might eventually accuse someone of taking advantage of her.
