The Second Place Setting Explained Why My Neighbor Never Ate Alone

Beside the second plate was a small folded note, yellowed at the edges from being handled so many times. The landlord said he had seen it before but never opened it. I hesitated, then unfolded it carefully. It was written in my neighbor’s handwriting and addressed to his late wife. The first line read, “Same time tomorrow, love.” Suddenly, the table made sense. He had been setting a place for her every evening because dinner had always been their time together.

...

The landlord told me that after she passed, he never stopped the routine. He cooked two portions, poured two glasses of water, and sometimes even spoke softly toward the empty chair. It wasn’t because he believed she was physically there. It was simply the one habit he couldn’t bring himself to surrender. Their marriage had lasted more than fifty years, and that little table had held birthdays, arguments, ordinary Tuesdays, and nearly every important conversation of their life.

What stayed with me most was the final sentence in the note: “If I go first, save me a seat.”

We left the table exactly as we found it that day.

At his funeral, I placed the note beside his photograph. For years, I had thought of him as the quiet old man next door who lived alone. I realized afterward that, in his own way, he had never really considered himself alone at all.
