Wren opened her backpack and pulled out a plastic folder covered in stickers. Inside was a folded sheet of paper with my father’s handwriting across the top. I recognized it immediately. It was the agreement I had been searching for. Months earlier, during another hospital stay, I had apparently tucked it into Wren’s art folder with several important papers and forgotten about it. Dad had written that Wren and I could remain in the carriage house indefinitely in exchange for my paying for the renovations and upkeep. His signature and the date were at the bottom.
The courtroom became very quiet. Martin asked for a recess so the document could be examined properly. It was not magically a deed transferring ownership to me, but it directly contradicted my parents’ claim that everyone had always understood the arrangement was temporary. My receipts, bank records, messages, and the $86,000 in improvements suddenly had written context.
Judge Abernathy did not hand me the property that afternoon. Instead, the eviction request was denied pending further proceedings over the agreement and my financial investment. My parents would have to address those issues before simply removing us.
Outside the courtroom, Mom stared at Wren’s little folder.
Wren squeezed my hand.
“I kept it because Grandpa wrote your name on it.”
My parents had remembered the house.
My seven-year-old had remembered the promise.
