Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is making major changes to her political operation heading into 2027, fueling renewed speculation about whether the New York Democrat is preparing for a larger campaign.
According to an Axios report cited in the source, longtime campaign manager Oliver Hidalgo-Wohlleben will leave in September after working with Ocasio-Cortez since her breakthrough 2018 congressional campaign. Senior aide Fiorella Bini will serve as interim campaign manager, while chief of staff Mike Casca is taking on expanded responsibilities spanning both her congressional and political operations.
The reshuffling goes beyond one departure. Creative director Tyler Evans reportedly left earlier this summer, while former aides Aya Saed and Tanushri Shankar-Ross are returning in senior advisory roles.
The changes arrive amid growing discussion about Ocasio-Cortez’s political future. The Democratic Socialists of America said she rejoined the organization in August 2026 after its leadership discovered that an earlier membership had lapsed. According to the organization, public discussion surrounding the 2028 presidential race prompted it to clarify her membership status.
Ocasio-Cortez herself has not announced a presidential campaign or a primary challenge against Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Her outgoing campaign manager also stopped short of revealing her plans, saying only that he supports whatever comes next.
Progressive activists have previously encouraged Ocasio-Cortez to challenge Schumer, while speculation about a possible national campaign has followed her increasing prominence within the Democratic Party.
For now, there is no declared candidacy. Still, the combination of senior staffing changes, returning advisers, and renewed ties with DSA ensures that every move surrounding Ocasio-Cortez will be closely watched as Democrats begin looking toward the next election cycle.
