The Box Revealed What Ryan Had Forgotten

Inside the box were Ryan’s passport, wallet, hotel confirmation, and the credit card he had used to book the entire vacation.

On top, I had placed a handwritten note:

Since your mother is your chosen travel companion, she can also handle your transportation, meals, reservations, and expenses. The children and I will be taking our own vacation.

Ryan hurried toward economy, no longer concerned about disturbing the other passengers.

He demanded the card back and insisted I was being childish. I reminded him that the account was mine, opened before our marriage, and that he had charged two business-class upgrades without asking me.

During our layover, I canceled the beachfront suite reserved in my name and booked a smaller hotel for the children and me. Ryan and Martha discovered that their separate resort reservation required a large deposit they could not place on his nearly maxed-out card.

Martha stopped smiling.

Ryan spent the rest of the trip calling relatives, moving money between accounts, and blaming me for embarrassing him.

When we returned home, I met with an attorney and separated our finances. The flight had not ended our marriage by itself.

It simply showed me the seating arrangement Ryan had created for our entire life.

His mother came first.

He came second.

The children and I were expected to accept whatever remained in the back.

By the end of the flight, I had decided we would never sit there again.
