Later that day, an officer called and asked us to return only after they had finished searching the apartment.
What they found made my stomach drop.
A man had been hiding inside our bedroom closet.
He had apparently entered through an unlocked window earlier that afternoon and stayed completely silent while my boyfriend fell asleep. When I came home, my boyfriend was still in bed, unaware anyone else was inside.
The person I saw taking a shower wasn’t actually my boyfriend.
It was the intruder.
For a few seconds, I had been standing only feet away from him, assuming I was looking at someone I trusted.
When I shouted that there was someone in our bedroom, my real boyfriend woke up, stepped into the hallway, and immediately understood something was terribly wrong. That was why he didn’t try to investigate. He told me to get outside, lock myself in the car, and call 911.
Police later found the intruder hiding after hearing them enter the apartment. Nothing valuable appeared to be missing, and we never learned exactly why he had chosen our place.
That evening, we changed every lock and installed window alarms.
For weeks afterward, I still checked the bathroom before walking inside.
The strangest part was realizing how easily my brain had accepted what I expected to see. I thought my boyfriend was in the shower because he was supposed to be the only other person home.
He wasn’t.
