The Two Envelopes Finally Exposed Craig’s Scheme

Craig stared at the envelopes.

“What lawsuit?”

“My lawsuit,” I said. “To remove the fraudulent mortgage and recover the losses it caused.”

His face changed.

Then Mom picked up the annuity statements again.

“You took this money?”

Craig immediately blamed bookkeeping mistakes.

Vanessa looked at him.

“You told us Mom gave Tessa ninety-five thousand dollars.”

Silence.

That was the lie holding everything together.

Craig had used Mom’s missing annuity money, the forged mortgage, and the fake family agreement to create one convenient story: Mom had funded my lake house, so the family deserved ownership.

Except the bank records proved she never sent me a cent.

My attorney had already filed to invalidate the mortgage. Dale’s admission and Craig’s recorded comments were included with the evidence.

I pushed the first envelope toward him.

“If you sign the repayment agreement, my attorney will consider resolving the financial claim without dragging this out.”

“And the second?”

“We proceed.”

Craig did not sign that night.

Three weeks later, after hiring his own lawyer, he did.

The fraudulent mortgage was released.

My title became clean again.

Mom recovered part of the money through the settlement, and I was finally able to refinance the lake house on my own terms.

Vanessa apologized eventually.

Craig never did.

At the barbecue, they had told Piper the house would someday belong to her.

They were half right.

Someday, it might belong to whoever I choose.

That was the part they had forgotten.
