The Highlighted Signature Ended Their Final Rescue

I picked up the pen, then slid it back across the table.

“No.”

Mom’s tears disappeared almost instantly.

Dad said Tyler only needed temporary help. Tyler promised he would refinance again once he found work. But the documents told a different story: the loan would place my income, credit, and rental properties behind his debt.

If Tyler defaulted, the bank could pursue me.

I asked whether they had offered their own house as collateral.

Nobody answered.

Then I noticed another page showing that Tyler planned to use part of the refinancing money to repay my parents’ retirement account. They were not asking me to save his home. They were asking me to absorb the consequences of the $60,000 decision they had made without me.

“You said signing costs me nothing,” I told Mom. “It could cost me everything.”

Tyler called me selfish. Dad reminded me that family helps family.

“I asked for help once,” I replied. “You told me to rent somewhere.”

I left without signing.

The bank denied Tyler’s application. His house was eventually sold before foreclosure, and my parents recovered only part of what they had given him.

My four properties remained protected.

Months later, Mom asked how I could watch my brother lose his home.

I looked at the key rack hanging in my kitchen.

“I did not take his house,” I said. “I simply refused to sacrifice mine.”
